Nordisk Akvarell 2019

Kristiina Kostia (FI), Bjørn Imislund (NO), Ann Larsson-Dahlin (SE), Tua Mylius (FI), Marianne Lehner (DK), Jessica Stuart-Beck (SE), Susanna Geidemark (SE), Marja Mali (FI), Erna Calderon (SE), Karin Keane (NO), Karin Feltzing (SE), Roald Grimsø (NO), Malin Redvall (NO), Hjördis Inga Ólafsdóttir (IS), Annika Mikkonen (SE), Maj-Lis Olsson (SE), Hans Persson (SE).

More than 100 guests had found their way to Tykö Masugn in the Finnish town of Teijo to attend the opening of the Nordic Watercolour 2019 exhibition on this cold but beautiful November day. Tykö Masugn used to be a major ironwork in the region, but has now been transferred to a museum and gallery as well as a cultural hub with café and artware shops.

All the guests were presented with a gift from the art materials supplier Winsor & Newton, who is the main sponsor of the event. Winsor & Newton gave away dot cards with swatches  of watercolour paint from the new cadmium-free series.  Winsor & Newton also donated 12 goodie-bags which could be won in a lottery. Each goodie-bag containes a watercolour pad and a brush as well as tubes of watercolour paint from the cadmium-free series and from the new “jewel-like”series that until now have been available in limited edition only.

A number of the participating artists from all the Nordic countries were present at the opening:

Kristiina Kostia (FI), Bjørn Imislund (NO), Ann Larsson-Dahlin (SE), Tua Mylius (FI), Marianne Lehner (DK), Jessica Stuart-Beck (SE), Susanna Geidemark (SE), Marja Mali (FI), Erna Calderon (SE), Karin Keane (NO), Karin Feltzing (SE), Roald Grimsø (NO), Malin Redvall (NO), Hjördis Inga Ólafsdóttir (IS), Annika Mikkonen (SE), Maj-Lis Olsson (SE), Hans Persson (SE).

winsor & Newton had chosed their favourite piece among the exhibited works, and Marja Mali was presented with the Winsor & Newton Watercolour Award. The prize consists of Winsor & Newton art material of her own choice at a value of 500 euros. The motivation is as follows: With a soft and beautiful flow of colors that complement each other, the subject is as interesting and thought-provoking as it is carefully rendered

Later in the afternoon Juha Bäckmand from Tykö Masugn guided a group of guests to the neighboring village church for a talk about the history of the church and the founding of the ironworks and the surrounding community. The opening day ended with a meal for 60 people in the nearby restaurant Arkki.

Two Finnish newspapers have brought very fine reviews of the exhibition.

During the spring of 2020 there will be a Watercolour Day in Tykö Masugn and there will also be a Free Academy during the final exhibition week. More information to follow.
